provide disk & bound ½ sized 11x17 prints of boards)
disks and prints are Due 4:00 on 3/05/2010
Reviewed on 3/07 & 09/2010
Format:
On Board One:
Show how  “Crop” “Climate” “Context” “Concept” influenced on your solution.
Using visuals with short on board typed narrative
On Board Two:
Communicate your solution’s “Form” “Order” “Expression” “Function” “Circulation.” Using visuals and short narrative.
On Board Three:
How your solution embraces “Structure”, “Materiality”, “Assembly” and  “Systems” (Environmental).
Using visuals and short narrative.
On Board Four:
Communicate Building’s Presence in its context and Habitation by its users.
How does enclosure, view, natural light contribute to the mix?
Using visuals and short narrative.
Visuals:
Context and Site Plans:
Place the site in context and place the facility on the site.
Building Floor Plans: (each building, each level)
Show how the following elements in your building interact to energize space; Partitions, Walls, Envelope, Openings (window & door – interior and exterior), Circulation Elements (both horizontal & vertical) Structural, Systems
Schematic Systems Diagrams:  showing Envelope. Structure and HVAC Diagrams
2 Buildings Sections: (each building)
Evidence how Spatial Quality is influenced by Structure and Materiality
Exterior and Interior Elevations or Perspectives:
Evidence Solid/Void Distinctions, Color, Structure and Materiality
Wall Sections:
The essence of Envelope, Structure, Materiality, Assembly and Systems
Sketches, Physical or Digital Models: showing process  and or product (digital photos on boards and or the real thing)
Narratives:
Short written paragraphs and captions that communicate intent and significance, allowing your boards to function in your absence.
Digital Presentation:
Digital presentation shall include “Board board equitant with the presentor’s ability to focus on visuals by zooming on them

Revised Problem #1 Schedule:

The revised schedule has changed the due date and  shifted the presentation until you return after spring break.
to compensate for this, I will issue Problem #2   on Wednesday March 7th prior to spring break.
Week 7
(w-2/22) Explore assembly: Finalize wall sections
f-2/24)  Explore & finalize HVAC  / practice elevation

Week 8
(m-2/27)    Perspective sections. Understand volume
(w-2/29) Digital modeling or study Interior spatial character
(f-3/02) Digital modeling or study Interior spatial character

Week 9
(m-3/05) Presentation layout finalized ( again see guidelines attached)
(w-3/07)  Assemble/plot final documentation / 1 hr ( 2:00 to 3:00  … Issue Problem #2)
(f-3/09)   Assemble/plot final documentation
Projects due; 4:00 pm  ( 1/2 size prints,  digitally via CD, and posted on blog)

Week 10
(f-3/19)   Problem #2 related
(f-3/21)   Problem #2 related
(f-3/23)   Final critique ( 22x34 plotted sheets of problem #1)Present during class time

Overlaying Your Plans

Regarding the discussion about overlaying the plan with information:
Getting comfortable with your established plan to the point that you can start layering information on it.

The consultants architects hire on a regular basis as colleagues on a regular basis to design buildings are:
Civil Engineers
setting property lines, easements, setbacks, and topography
Geotechnical Engineers
for soil reports including soil behavior as related to excavation, moisture, bearing capacity
Structural Engineers
designing footings, foundations based on recommendations from Geotechnical Engineers , sizing structural  systems, verify dead, live and loads including wind, precipitation and programatic loads
Mechanical Engineers
Designing water  and waste systems, fire abatement, heating, cooling and ventilation.
Electrical Engineers
Designing power, and electrical systems for telecommunication IT and illumination.

Although around from the beginning in the decision making process, these consultants wait for the architect to  convert the clients programatic desires  into client approved schematic design. AT this time the Architect turns over a "backgrounds to the consultants" these are those established plan drawings confidentially prepared by architect who feels will not substantially change over the duration of the design process.

This is the kind of confidence that YOU need to exude you use as you layer information on them. I suggested:
Spatial Use
Levels and roofs and the structural systems that support them
Occupancy Type
Occupancy Separation borders between occupancies and a speculation of the fire rating of these separation
Egress System
Building envelope…establishing  walls
Interior circulation and use establishing rooms
Routes for Plumbing  water supply and waste lines
Routes for HVAC
(Routing Plumbing and HVAC start to answering where services are located on the site and where building equipment rooms are positioned in the building, and vertical chases between levels )

All the above are very plan specific and therefore the plan becomes the key to design development and completion of the construction documents.

Your Blogs Reflect your Design:

There are champion bloggers in our section and a number of bogged down bloggers. Please Post- Review and Comment.  In taking a quick look see it is very apparent to me with a few exception from the blogs those who are making serious efforts to solve this design problem and those who are not.

Auto hobbyists refer to a cheap paint job as a 20 ft paint job .. It looks good from 20 feet but don't get closer.  Here we can substitute time for distance. If you have little or nothing to blog after the end of 6 weeks of a 9 week problem you will only  the potential to post a 3 week solution at the end.

Party On!... Frank would have wanted it that way.

Time for a break and to watch the commercials, Madonna, and oh ya the game.
I'm making a slight change in plans for studio …. DUE FRIDAY:

Desk Crits regarding during the week  we will have a discussion about structural nature your designs)
the following architectural views: (scaled and  intended for further development)

Floor plans: include exterior envelope, interior partitions, doors prelim locations for windows label spaces

Elevations:  each elevation of each structure in the complex label material decisions, locate prelim window
curtain wall locations

Wall Sections; 1 cross section showing important features, label  floor to floor heights spaces that the section is cutting thru (show the cutlines on your plans and elevations)

Structural Model as discussed earlier

So in summary ... the above items are due on Friday Feb 10th.
